January Monthly Meeting: Bernienonomics 101
January 31 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
If you’re like me then you’ve had this conversation: you say you want massive government programs like Medicare For All or a Green New deal in order to create a more humane world and some centrist Democrat asks, “How ya gonna pay for it? You’ll have to raise massive taxes to fund that pie in the sky dream. The government is broke and can’t afford it.” You don’t have an answer so you have to walk away and remember back when we were a country that set and achieved ambitious goals. You might wonder why we could afford the New Deal under FDR but can no longer afford similar sized projects.
The good news is that other people have already answered that question for you. Bernie and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are both being advised by economist Dr. Stephanie Kelton who pioneered a field of economics called Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) which describes how money actually works in our country. Dr. Kelton reminds us that countries which issues their own currency and denominates its debt in that currency cannot go broke.
Please join us on Thursday, January 31st at 7pm at the Seminole Heights Public Library to get a better understanding of MMT. Leading the presentation will be Dr Scott Ferguson from USF. Dr Ferguson studies the way that culture gets affected by economics. There will be a presentation and time for questions afterwards. There will be short speeches by candidates in the upcoming Tampa municipal races and a call to action for more federal spending for the welfare of the American people.
